Strong storm and extreme cold grips Newfoundland and Labrador


St. John's saw heavy snow on Friday followed by heavy rain.

Every area of Newfoundland and Labrador is under a weather alert of some kind as a strong storm and extreme cold take hold in the province.


For the west coast of Newfoundland, the south coast, and the Avalon there are snow squall warnings in effect. Snow squalls are possible today and tonight. Snowfall amounts will vary but should range between 5 and 15 cm.


Across most of Labrador, there are blowing snow advisories in effect. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm are expected and winds will gust to 100 km/h.


Wind warnings are in effect across most of coastal Newfoundland and coastal Labrador. For the Avalon and south coast gusts between 100 and 120 km/h are expected today until overnight tonight. The west coast will see gusts from 90 to 100 km/h and gusts up to 100 km/h are expected in Lbacrador.


Most of coastal Labrador is dealing with a blizzard warning. In these areas wind gusts up to 130 km/h are possible.


Snowfall forecast:

Postville-Makkovik to Hopedale: 60 to 80 cm

Natuashish: near 25 cm.

Nain: 10 to 15 cm.


Finally, most of the province is under an extreme cold warning.


Across Labrador winds chills of minus 45 to minus 50 are expected today and tonight. On the Island wind chills of around minus 30 are expected today and tonight.
