Governor General Julie Payette Resigns #CDNpoli


Governor General Julie Payette has resigned.


Payette resigned the office after the completion of the independent workplace review.


On July 21, 2020, CBC News reported that Payette had allegedly created a toxic work environment at Rideau Hall by verbally abusing employees.


Two days later, the Privy Council Office formally launched an investigation into her conduct.


Multiple former employees said that they experienced abusive behaviour by Payette.


She was appointed to the role on October 2, 2017.


The Governor General is the Queens Representative in Canada. As a result the Prime Minister cannot fire a Governor General.


Richard Wagner who serves as the 18th and current chief justice of Canada is temporarily serving as administrator of the government, following the resignation.
