Government Discontinues Birth Alerts to Hospitals


The provincial government has ended the child protection practice of sending birth alerts to hospitals in Newfoundland and Labrador.


Birth alerts disproportionately impact Indigenous and marginalized expectant parents and contribute to the individual is less likely to seek support in advance of birth for fear their baby may be removed.


The Duty to Report remained in place. Everyone has a responsibility to report concerns of child maltreatment.
