Gas prices to increase tonight as carbon tax hike comes into effect

After days of rising fuel prices, another increase is scheduled for tonight.

Gasoline will increase by 2.6 cents and diesel will increase by 3.1 cents.

The federal government says that putting a price on carbon pollution is "recognized as the most efficient means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Any proceeds from the carbon tax remain in the jurisdiction where they were collected. Provinces and territories are permitted to use the funds as they see fit.
