Fish harvesters concerned over Coast Guard announcement
Jason Spingle, FFAW Secretary-Treasurer says that "fish harvesters are rightly concerned that DFO’s elimination of the Northern Cod and Northern Shrimp assessments this year will result in decreases or rollovers of total allowable catches."
The announcement comes after the union says DFO announced that it would be decommissioning one of four survey vessels, as well as cancelling the Northern Cod and Northern Shrimp assessments planned for this spring.
On Thursday DFO announced that the CCGS Alfred Needler is being decommissioned. Last year and earlier this year the Alfred Needler suffered a number of significant mechanical and structural failures and it has been determined that the vessel is beyond repair.
The ship has been in service for over 40 years.
The union will be meeting with federal Minister of Labour and MP, Seamus O’Regan today.
