Federal government tables legislation to ban conversion therapy

The federal government has tabled legislation to ban conversion therapy practices in Canada.

Conversion therapy is a practice that attempts to change a person's sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. It is known to have lasting psychological impacts.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti and Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth Marci Ien introduced proposed amendments to the Criminal Code to ban so-called conversion therapy practices in Canada.

This bill would make Canada’s criminal laws on conversion therapy practices among the most comprehensive in the world protecting all Canadians from the practice, not just children.
