Chris Weeks earned Newfoundland and Labrador's first gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

The 17-year-old from Kilbride won the 50-metre butterfly with a time of 24:53. He won a bronze medal a day earlier.

Weeks has only been swimming competitively for four years with the Mount Pearl Marlins.

In a statement, Weeks said, “It felt great racing in this field and being at the wall with my competitors, then seeing I won was amazing.”

I’ve had this goal for a while, and I am thankful to my coach Chris Roberts in Mount Pearl and to my parents who have helped to support me to achieve this.”

This is the first Canada Games gold medal for Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador since 1993.
