Carbonear council votes to keep locomotive 803, at least for now

After public feedback, the Carbonear council voted to keep locomotive 803, at least for now.

The town will keep the train until at least August 31, 2023.

There was a discussion on the formation of a committee to look at a way to get the funds to fix the train.

Councillor Ray Noel challenged those who signed the online petition to step up financially to save the train.

Deputy Mayor Sam Slade echoed those comments and added that this is a "last effort" to save the train.

The council of the Town of Carbonear voted at the last meeting to remove the locomotive 803 train that has been in the town since the late 1980s.

Locomotive 803 has fallen into a state of disrepair and is now a safety concern.

The town stated at the time that the cost of repairing was too high of a burden to put on taxpayers.
