U.S. health secretary Alex Azar said on Sunday that there has been no spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the parts of the country that has reopened.
Azar stated that increases in cases are occurring in some areas that remain closed.
The decision to open has been left up to local governments.
As of Sunday, there were 1.52 million cases in the United States, an increase of 19,731 on Saturday. So far 281 thousand have recovered and 89,932 people have died.
New York has been the hardest hit state with 350 thousand cases so far.
