Fish Processing Licensing Board Completes Policy Review

The provincial Fish Processing Licensing Board has completed a review of the Fish Processing Licensing Policy Manual and made recommendations to the Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources.

The review was undertaken in response to a request from Minister Byrne in November 2019 in light of changing economic, environmental, and resource issues, to conduct a comprehensive review of the Fish Processing Licensing Policy Manual and provide the Board’s assessments and recommendations on whether changes were required.

Key recommendations made by the board focused on:

  • The elimination of the mandatory provisions of the resource threshold limits;

  • Changing the harvesting threshold to reflect the reality of current levels of quota; and

  • Implementing a requirement that the policy manual be reviewed every five years to ensure that it reflects the reality of current industry conditions.
